Finding the perfect yoga school can feel overwhelming, especially with so many options available worldwide. But the right school is out there for you, just as it was for me. I want to share my journey and experiences to help guide you in making the best decision for your yoga teacher training (YTT).

My Journey: From the Maldives to India

While I was living in the Maldives, I was searching for a more efficient way to practice yoga than on my own. Yoga was already an important part of my life, but I felt the need for guidance and alignment from a teacher. I found a studio in the city, where I practiced Hatha and Flying Yoga, both of which deepened my practice.

If you’re ever in the Maldives, check out Iru Studio on Instagram. It’s where I first experienced the magic of being in a class with a teacher who could provide real-time adjustments and insights.

1. Online Training: A Pandemic-Era Solution

During the pandemic, when travel was restricted, I decided to take my first 200-hour YTT online. I enrolled with OnlineYoga School, which offered a comprehensive course that fit my needs at the time. The training covered essential aspects like Yoga Philosophy, Anatomy, Chakras, Asanas, and Teaching Methodology.

In addition to the basics, I earned certifications in Restorative Yoga, Ayurveda Specialist, and Chair Yoga, which expanded my ability to teach a diverse range of students.

2. Rishikesh, India: Yoga Capital of the World

India has always been the spiritual heart of yoga, and my dream was to practice in Rishikesh, the "Yoga Capital of the World." So, for my 300-hour YTT, I chose to study at Rishikul Yogshala. This training went deeper into Hatha and Ashtanga-Vinyasa styles, Pranayama, Meditation, and Yogic Philosophy.

Rishikesh is a place of spiritual growth and self-discovery, and the experience there was transformative. Being surrounded by the Himalayas and the Ganges River amplified the whole journey.

3. Goa, India: Beach Vibes and Acro Yoga

Later, I returned to India to complete another 200-hour YTT in Goa with Tapas Yoga India. This time, the training was multi-style, incorporating Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, and even Acro Yoga. Practicing Acro Yoga on the beach was one of the most fun and liberating experiences I’ve ever had.

Tips for Finding Your Yoga School

Whether you want to train online, in India, or somewhere else in the world, here are a few tips to help you find the right school:

  1. Identify Your Yoga Style: Think about the yoga style that resonates most with you. Whether it's Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, or a blend, finding a school that specializes in your preferred style will make your experience more fulfilling.

  2. Research the Teachers: Look into the teachers' qualifications and experience. Check out their Instagram or website to get a feel for their teaching style. For example, I found an amazing teacher in Sri Lanka, Aaron Wik, who continues to inspire me.

  3. Consider the Location: Whether it’s the serene beaches of Goa or the spiritual mountains of Rishikesh, location can have a profound impact on your experience. India offers a deep immersion into the yogic lifestyle, but there are also beautiful training centers worldwide.

  4. Check Reviews and Accreditation: Make sure the school is accredited by a reputable organization, like Yoga Alliance, and read reviews from past students.

  5. Trust Your Intuition: Ultimately, trust yourself. When you find the right school, you’ll know. It should feel like a place where you can grow, learn, and transform.

Final Thoughts

Yoga Teacher Training is a life-changing experience, and finding the right school can set the foundation for your growth as both a practitioner and a teacher. I hope sharing my journey gives you some insights and inspiration. Whether you choose an online course or travel to a far-off destination, follow your heart and keep practicing!
